Brewing methods

French Press

A full-immersion brewer where coarsely ground coffee steeps directly in hot water for about four minutes before a metal mesh plunger separates the grounds.

  • Also called: cafetière, press pot
  • Availability: Specialty

The French press (also called a cafetière or press pot) is one of the oldest brewing devices still in everyday use, with patents dating to the 1920s. Because the metal mesh filter lets oils and very fine particles through, the resulting cup is heavier-bodied and more textured than a paper-filtered pour-over. It has fallen out of fashion at most Brooklyn specialty bars in favor of pour-over, but it remains a great home method for anyone who likes a richer mouthfeel.
