- Origin: Italian
- Ratio: 1 espresso : 1 steamed milk : 1 foam
- Availability: Common
A traditional Italian cappuccino is a 5–6 oz drink built on a one-third / one-third / one-third split: espresso, steamed milk, and a deep foam cap. American interpretations are often larger and wetter, but Brooklyn specialty bars usually default to the smaller, foam-forward Italian style. It is meant as a morning drink — Italians traditionally do not order it after 11 a.m. — and its foam cap makes it a different texture experience from a flat white or latte.
Etymology
Named for the brown-and-white robes of the Capuchin friars, whose color the drink resembles.
