Fontainhas opened in summer 2024 on a quiet stretch of Jay Street and has quickly become one of the most distinctive coffee shops in DUMBO — NYC's first café showcasing high-quality Indian specialty coffee, sourced from Araku in southern India. Named after the Latin Quarter in Goa, the all-day Goan café also runs an attached provisions shop called Dukaan that carries Indian and Indian-adjacent pantry goods (Graza olive oil, Maggi seasoning, dosa chips). The Infatuation has called it a refreshing alternative to the surrounding crowded shops serving mediocre lattes. The drink menu is anchored by serious Araku coffee — single-origin lots that highlight the under-represented Indian growing region — but the signature offering is the Royal Chai: a layered chai with a sea-salt cream cap and a sprinkle of saffron, served in a chalice. The food program leans Goan and Indian-coastal, the seating is generous and laptop-friendly, and the aesthetic is warm and lived-in rather than minimalist. A meaningful addition to the neighborhood's coffee culture.
