Drinks

Shakerato · shah-keh-RAH-toh

An Italian iced espresso shaken vigorously with ice in a cocktail shaker until frothy, then strained into a chilled glass — no milk.

  • Origin: Italian
  • Availability: Rare find

Caffè shakerato is built like a cocktail: a fresh double espresso, a small amount of sugar, and a scoop of ice, all shaken hard for about 20 seconds and strained into a coupe or martini glass. The shake aerates the crema into a thick foam cap and chills the espresso almost instantly. It is one of the most refreshing summer espresso preparations on a Brooklyn menu when a shop bothers to make it properly.

Etymology

From the English loanword "shaker" Italianized — literally "shaken."
