Origin & sourcing

Cup of Excellence

An annual blind-tasting competition in producing countries that ranks the top coffees of a harvest — winners are then auctioned to roasters worldwide.

  • Also called: CoE
  • Availability: Rare find

Cup of Excellence (CoE) was founded in 1999 and is run by the Alliance for Coffee Excellence. National competitions in producing countries (Brazil, Colombia, Honduras, Ethiopia, and others) blind-cup harvest entries and rank the top lots, which are then sold by online auction. CoE-winning lots regularly clear $10–$200+ per pound of green coffee — multiples of the commodity rate — and end up on the rotating manual-brew bars of Brooklyn's best specialty roasters.
