A Local's Guide to Coffee in Gowanus (October 2026)

Where to get coffee in Gowanus: Long Shadow and Fiorella on 3rd Ave, Root Hill on 4th Ave, and espresso inside a brewery. A walkable local route.

By Henrique do Valle

Gowanus, Brooklyn

Gowanus does not have a main cafe strip, and that is the reason to go. The coffee runs through a pie shop, a brewery, a flower counter and a pay-what-you-can coffeehouse, spread across 3rd Ave, 4th Ave and the side streets between Park Slope and Carroll Gardens. For the full list of 12 shops, use the Gowanus hub. This post is a walk: where to stop, and in what order, with the Gowanus shops where the cup is the main event as the deeper cut.

Start at the north end. Still Life, 573 Sackett St · 4.8 · weekdays 8am to 4:30pm, so check weekend hours before you go. A calm, carefully designed room with big tables, tea alongside the coffee, and open sandwiches and toast if breakfast is part of the plan. A few blocks over, Ninth Street Espresso at Threes Brewing, 333 Douglass St · 4.6 · daily 8am to 3pm. It is Ninth Street's espresso bar inside the brewery, with seating inside and out. It closes at 3pm, so it belongs at the front of the day.

Then come down 4th Ave. Root Hill Cafe, 262 4th Ave · 4.4 · weekdays 7:30am to 4pm, weekends 8am to 4pm. It is a woman-owned neighborhood cafe pouring Joe Coffee, with breakfast sandwiches on the menu. It has WiFi and outlets if you need to sit with a laptop for a while. Farther down, Luna La Mer, 468 4th Ave · 4.7 · Wednesday to Sunday 8am to 4pm, closed Monday and Tuesday, is the stop for anyone eating gluten-free. Reviewers call out the gluten-free focaccia sandwich.

Gowanus, Brooklyn
Gowanus sits between Park Slope and Carroll Gardens.

Cut west to 3rd Ave, the longest stretch of the walk. At the top, The Block Coffee, 257 3rd Ave · weekdays 7am to 4pm, weekends 8am to 5pm, pours espresso drinks and Turkish coffee and has a back garden. Head south to Four & Twenty Blackbirds, 439 3rd Ave · 4.5 · weekdays 8am to 6pm, Saturday 9am to 7pm, Sunday 10am to 7pm. It is a pie shop first, with Variety Coffee behind the counter, wood floors and a tin ceiling. Then Fiorella Coffee & Flower Shop, 510 3rd Ave · 4.8 · 7pm close Tuesday through Sunday, 5pm on Monday, where you can leave with a coffee and a bouquet.

End where the cup is the point. Long Shadow Coffee, 543 3rd Ave · 5.0 · Monday to Thursday 7:30am to 4pm, Friday 7:30am to 3pm, weekends 8am to 3pm. It is a daytime cafe in an old bar space, with the espresso program up front and a backyard out back. Its weekend hours are short, so on a Saturday it makes sense to flip the walk and start here. Those ratings are from Google.

Two stops sit off the avenues and are worth the detour. Principles GI Coffee House, 139 9th St · 4.8 · Tuesday to Saturday 8am to 4:55pm, Monday 8am to 7pm, Sunday 9am to 4pm, is a queer-owned, community-focused coffeehouse with a pay-what-you-can model, rotating guest roasters and all-vegan pastries. To the west, Cafecito Social, 296 Bond St · 4.5 · weekdays 7am to 4pm, weekends 8am to 4pm, is Guatemalan-owned and pours single-origin beans roasted at origin. The Tres Leches Latte and the Cardamom Latte are the drinks it is known for.

Pick the stop for the reason you are going, then open the Gowanus hub for all 12 shops with live hours and ratings. If you want to keep walking, go west into Carroll Gardens or east into Park Slope.
