Devoción is a Certified B Corporation founded in 2006 by Colombian-born Steven Sutton, who grew up in Medellín before moving to the United States at age fourteen. After a brief career in the music industry, Sutton took a job with a coffee distributor in Miami, where he recognized that Colombian coffee was vastly underrepresented in the specialty market. He returned to Colombia and built a vertically integrated supply chain that eliminates warehouses and importers entirely, shipping freshly harvested beans by air from over one thousand independent Colombian coffee producers directly to Brooklyn — often arriving within ten days of harvest, compared to the industry standard of six to twelve months. The Williamsburg flagship at 148 Grand Street occupies a striking 2,500-square-foot converted warehouse designed by LOT Office for Architecture, whose principals traveled to Colombia on a week-long research trip to study regional materials and finca architecture. The result is a space anchored by a massive pitched-roof skylight that bathes an extraordinary living wall of more than two thousand plants — spanning thirty-five-plus species including fishtail palms, carambola trees, watermelon peperomias, philodendrons, and coffee plants — in natural light. Eighteen-foot floor-to-ceiling windows line the facade, and handcrafted wooden details echo the warmth of a traditional Colombian coffee farm. A glass-walled roasting room lets visitors watch the roasting process in real time, and an on-site coffee laboratory hosts public cuppings, tastings, espresso technique classes, latte art workshops, and pour-over tutorials. Devoción operates its own dry-milling facility in Bogotá, giving the company full control over processing, quality grading, and export logistics — ensuring that more value returns directly to the farming communities it partners with. Because Colombia's diverse microclimates produce harvests at staggered intervals throughout the year, Devoción is able to source fresh green coffee year-round without relying on aged inventory. All U.S. retail operations run on one hundred percent renewable energy through a partnership with David Energy, and the company has committed to Science Based Targets (SBTi) for decarbonizing its retail footprint. Customers can offset the carbon footprint of their order at checkout, and Devoción matches every contribution toward agroforestry restoration projects in Colombia. A reusable cup program across all cafes diverted hundreds of pounds of waste in its first year alone. Beyond Williamsburg, Devoción has locations in Downtown Brooklyn, DUMBO, the Flatiron District, and Midtown Manhattan. The company has been featured in Dezeen, Wallpaper*, Dwell, Sprudge, Eater, TimeOut, and numerous other publications, and is widely recognized for serving some of the freshest specialty coffee available anywhere in the world.
