Drinks

Mocha · MOH-kuh

A latte with chocolate added — typically espresso, steamed milk, and either chocolate syrup or melted ganache, served at 10–12 oz.

  • Also called: mocaccino, caffè mocha
  • Ratio: 1 espresso : 5 steamed milk + chocolate
  • Availability: Common

A caffè mocha (or mocaccino) is a chocolate-and-espresso drink whose name traces back to the Yemeni port of Mokha, historically a major coffee export hub. Modern preparations vary widely — the better Brooklyn versions use real melted chocolate or ganache rather than pumped syrup, and the resulting drink is closer to a thinned hot chocolate with espresso than a sweetened latte.

Etymology

Named for the Yemeni Red Sea port of al-Mokha, historically the world's primary coffee export hub from the 15th–18th centuries.
