Drinks

Galão · gah-LOWN

A Portuguese espresso-and-milk drink served in a tall glass — roughly one part espresso to three parts foamed milk, similar to a small latte.

  • Origin: Portuguese
  • Ratio: 1 espresso : 3 foamed milk
  • Availability: Rare find

A galão (Portuguese for "big one") is the Portuguese answer to the latte, served in a tall glass at roughly 6–8 oz with about a one-to-three espresso-to-milk ratio. It is the standard breakfast coffee in Lisbon cafés. It rarely shows up by name on Brooklyn menus but pops up at Portuguese-influenced shops in the borough.
