Distribution Tool / WDT

A tool — usually a small disc with prongs or a hand-held bundle of fine needles — used to break up clumps and even out grounds in the portafilter before tamping.

  • Also called: WDT, Weiss Distribution Technique
  • Availability: Common

WDT (the Weiss Distribution Technique, named for John Weiss) involves stirring the dosed grounds with very thin needles to break clumps and redistribute particles before tamping. The result is a more uniform puck and dramatically reduced channeling. Modern variations include rotating distribution tools that flatten and gently spin the grounds. WDT has become standard at virtually every Brooklyn specialty bar in the last decade.
